First Judo Class – What to Expect
If you don't yet own a judo gi (uniform), that's okay!
For your first class, wear:
A plain T-shirt or rash guard (no buttons or zippers)
Athletic pants or shorts (no zippers, belts, or metal)
Flip-flops or sandals to wear to the mat (you’ll go barefoot on the mat)
Once you decide to join, we can help you purchase a properly fitted judo gi.
What to Wear
When to Arrive
Cleanliness and respect are important in judo. Please make sure:
Fingernails and toenails are trimmed
You and your uniform are clean
Jewelry is removed before class
You bow when entering/exiting the mat
You treat your partners respectfully and follow your instructor's guidance
Hygiene & Etiquette
Please arrive 15 minutes early for your first class. This gives us time to meet you, answer any questions, and get you ready before we begin.
What You'll Learn in Your First Class
We focus on safety and fundamentals in the first few classes.
You’ll learn:
How to bow and follow basic dojo etiquette
How to safely fall and roll (ukemi)
Basic gripping and movement
Your first throw or hold
Expect to spend time doing light warm-ups, body movement drills, and paired practice with guidance.
What You Don’t Need to Worry About
You don’t need to be in top shape. Judo will help you build strength, balance, and flexibility over time.
You don’t need any martial arts experience. Many of our students started with zero background.
You won’t spar on day one. You’ll only work with partners in safe, structured drills.
